Making Paper Dolls (Again)

17 07 2009

Now that I don’t have a dedicated artist to hand me polished art work any more, I was tasked with the job of remaking the paper dolls that show up on the game screen whenever somebody speaks. To use an illustrated example, this was what I needed.

Unfortunately, actually getting down to making these sprites is a bit more tricky. Since they come in a variety of different costumes, facial expressions, and poses, it’s necessary to treat them like paper dolls and create different exchangeable layers, as demonstrated by our chibi C.C. in this picture.

Just like Sixten did before me, I’ve recreated the lowermost layer of the characters, or what Sixten referred to as the “mass naked child event.” Thanks to the glory that is game development, we were forced to strip these nubile young lasses down to their bare epidermis and lovingly sculpt every nook and cranny of their delectable anatomies to order. For 14 straight days. Sometimes for up to 6 hours at a time. Yes, the perils of visual novel development are indeed immense.

As you probably guessed, what comes next is not safe for work. (Although given the fact that all the characters are standing straight and staring neutrally at the player, it has all the sex appeal of a visit to the doctor’s office.) Click to continue reading.

The Space Girls – Meet and Greet

21 05 2009

logo

Hello everyone, and welcome to the first installment of The Space Girls: Meet and Greet! Sunrider seriously boasts one of the biggest casts ever in a English language visual novel, with the title ship being crewed by five delightful female crew mates (DFC) by itself. (And don’t forget, there’s one more DFC on a rival ship too.) So let’s get to meeting and greeting them all, shall we?

Mechanical Files #1

12 04 2009

Well, the original plan was to have a series of in depth posts about the Sunrider design process, but we kind of got buried underneath all the work we had to do and ended up going for a much smaller public preview. Sorry everyone, but looks like you’ll have to be satisfied with just these pictures for now.

There’s another batch of pictures at HC Staff, so go head there now. =3

An Open Invitation to Sixten

4 02 2009

Sixten, as you probably know if you’re coming here, is the owner of Heart’s Content. He’s the one responsible for the absolutely hysterically funny Miao Diary, which you really should look at if you haven’t by now. Since it doesn’t look like the email listed on his blog is working, and I’m not sure where else exactly to ask him, this is an open invitation for Sixten for a position on Sunrider as an artist/writer. Of course, he is under absolutely no obligation to accept such a position, and is free to make his own decision about this matter. All I want him to know is that he will always be welcome aboard this ship.

Wanted: First officier onboard the starship Sunrider. Must be willing to put up with Asaga’s whining, be able to handle typical harem situations, and lead a crack team of DFCs.

Sunrider Mechas – The Preview of the Preview

18 01 2009

Before I turn in for the night, have a small pre-preview of the mechanical ships to come. Hang in there tight while I work more on the game! =3

Sunrider Character Preview

18 01 2009

I suppose I should finally give that blog exclusive preview that I promised. Okay, it isn’t much, but here’s a small character preview. I’m hoping to colour this and make a promotional poster with it soon.

New Look

4 01 2009

Since the last style was getting old and the banner had obsolete art anyways, I decided to change the blog’s look. Honestly, I think this is probably the best this blog’s ever looked so far. Just like last time, the banner was made by me with some art for Sunrider.

I’m currently debating how heavily to promote this blog and just how much of the game to show here… I mean, I’d love to show off all my stuff, but then I don’t want to spoil too much of it before the game’s released. Also, maybe it’ll be a bit redundant to promote Sunrider here when I already have a topic about it on Lemmasoft. (Of course, I know that some of the readers here don’t have anything to do with Lemma, so maybe I should provide updates just to keep you guys informed.)

Okay, okay, I guess I could show just a bit of the game… And provide some bonus previews on the blog… Like maybe a screenshot… Or two. (Well, you got to see the new banner, how’s that for now? What, you want more? XD)

Busy Times Ahead

1 09 2008

Did you hear that? That was the sound of classes beginning…

It looks like I’ll be in for a pretty rough year this time… Not only am I once again a full time student, but I’m also taking up kendo (no thanks to my lovely Kirino… =3) and I’m also going to start working part time to make ends meet/buy something very special

This means that I’ll probably have a lot less time to work on my art and write… It’s really sad, but I guess I’ll still be a rabid anime fan and I’ll be one step closer to winning Kirino’s heart, so it should all be worth it in the end. =3

Cloudy

16 08 2008

Ugghh… You remember that little comparison shot a few days ago between my post-Raidaa no Asahi art quality and my current art quality? Well, that little spurt of improvement is essentially causing havoc on SunRiders. Virtually every single piece of art I’ve drawn on the project has been rendered obsolete and I probably have to redraw everything now. If the difference wasn’t even that big, I’d just move on without caring much, but when it’s pretty much like night and day, it’s going to cause problems.

Also, I’m kind of worried that whatever I draw now will also be rendered obsolete in six months as well. I predict that on average the speed of improvement is shaped somewhat like an inverse tan function (pictured below), but it seems kind of silly to draw things now for a project only to realize mid-way that I’m going to have to redraw everything again.

*keyboardfaceplop* /(_._)\

Improvement is not always a good thing…

Development

10 08 2008

You know what? Considering that this is supposed to be a development blog, there’s been a conspicuous lack of actually talking about any of my projects here. So here’s a short summary of what’s been going on in Studio SunRider. (I made that company name just right now. :3)

First off, some of you have seen this leg before. Yes, this is supposed to be the leg of a mecha. I’m not really happy with it, and I’m thinking about making a new one… >_>;; It looks a bit too fat…

In addition, my mysterious side project has been canceled due to a variety of reasons, but you can look at all the art I had created for it.

I’ve spent the past couple of days trying to 3D model Asaga… And yet I have failed every. Single. Time. So far, this is my most promising attempt… But I’m so tired to trying to make it that I think I’ve just about given up and I’m going to draw the characters in 2D.

My 3D abilities are mostly in the area of mechanical stuff…

Finally, this is a part of the script. :3
